A hard reset is the last resort for troubleshooting. This reset will cause all data to appear erased (it may be possible to retrieve data using special software) and restore preferences to factory default specifications. Performing a hard reset is only recommended when the existing data has been backed up or is unwanted.
To ensure the data is wiped from the device return it to Samsung's Customer Care for an Extended File System (EFS) Clear. While under warranty (proof of purchase required) this service is provided at no charge.

If the preferred method is not available, there is an Alternate Method.

Preferred Method

1. From the Today screen, tap Start > Phone.
   
2. From the Phone screen, tap Menu > Options.
   
3. From the Security tab, tap Clear All Data.
   
4. Enter the password (default password is the last 4 digits of the mobile number) then tap OK.
   
5. Tap Yes.
   

Alternate method

1. Slide open the device to expose the QWERTY keyboard.
2. Press and hold the center of the 5-way navigation pad.
   
3. While holding the center of the 5-way navigation pad, use the stylus to gently press and release the reset button.
   
4. When Clearing Data... appears on the screen, release the center of the 5-way navigation pad.
5. When prompted, tap the screen to setup the device.
